Legend

Tradition holds that the sage Bhrigu struck Vishnu on the chest, and Lakshmi, insulted, left Vaikuntha. Vishnu came down to the Seshachalam hills as Srinivasa, met and married the princess Padmavati, and took a huge loan from Kubera, the god of wealth, to pay for the wedding. Devotees believe their offerings in the hundi help the Lord repay that debt. In the Kali age he stays here as Venkateswara, the Kaliyuga Prathyaksha Daivam, the god who is present for this age.

Why this temple matters

The Tirumala temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and one of the richest and most visited temples in the world, with around 24 million pilgrims a year and more than 60,000 on an ordinary day. It stands on Venkatadri, one of the seven hills of Seshachalam, at about 850 metres. The sanctum, Ananda Nilayam, has a gilded vimana; Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara was among its great donors. The temple has about 640 inscriptions and is run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

What devotees pray for here

Wealth & Prosperity

Because the Lord himself borrowed from Kubera for his wedding, devotees believe that what they drop into the hundi goes toward his debt and returns to them many times over. People pray here for relief from loans, for prosperity in business and for a secure household, and many vow a share of their first earnings or profits to the hundi.

Career Growth

Students before exams, young people before interviews and families before a move abroad come to Tirumala with a mokku, a vow, and return to fulfil it when the wish is granted, often by offering their hair at Kalyanakatta. Devotees believe Venkateswara removes obstacles in the way of honest effort.

Festivals

  • Srivari Brahmotsavam (September–October): nine days of vahana processions around the temple streets
  • Vaikunta Ekadasi (December–January): the Vaikunta Dwaram around the sanctum is opened and lakhs pass through it
