Devotees see this temple, built by one of India's greatest kings at the height of his power, as a place of leadership and accomplishment. Many come before a new job, a promotion, a business launch or an exam and offer archana to Peruvudaiyar, praying for the clarity and courage that Rajaraja is remembered for.
Job seekers, especially those hoping to work abroad, make the same 11-round vow here, asking Balaji for the right opportunity and the strength to keep trying.
Devotees traditionally take up the Sabarimala vratham at turning points in working life: a new job, a new venture, an exam or a transfer. Tradition holds that the 41 days of simple food, early baths, celibacy and restraint build the discipline Ayyappa rewards. Carrying the irumudi up the eighteen steps and pouring one's own ghee over the deity in Neyyabhishekam is believed to signify surrender of the self; many also sponsor Sahasranamarchana or Ashtabhishekam in their name.
As the remover of obstacles, Siddhivinayak is where Mumbai goes before a new job, a business launch or a film release. Devotees offer durva grass and modak and take a sankalpa for the venture.
Devotees approach Kanaka Durga, the slayer of Mahishasura, for courage and success in their work, asking her to clear obstacles before a new job, an exam or a new venture. Many climb Indrakeeladri during Dasara to begin something new with her blessing.
Students before exams, young people before interviews and families before a move abroad come to Tirumala with a mokku, a vow, and return to fulfil it when the wish is granted, often by offering their hair at Kalyanakatta. Devotees believe Venkateswara removes obstacles in the way of honest effort.
