Mahalakshmi Temple

Mumbai, Maharashtra

Mumbai's trading families come here before opening a shop, signing a deal or starting the financial year. Devotees offer lotus flowers, coconuts and sweets to Mahalakshmi and pray for steady prosperity, the clearing of debts and protection of what they have earned.

Siddhivinayak Temple

Mumbai, Maharashtra

Riddhi and Siddhi beside the deity are prosperity and attainment themselves. Traders and families pray here on Tuesdays for steady income and the clearing of debts.

Sri Kanaka Durga Temple

Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh

Kanaka means gold, and the golden Durga is prayed to for prosperity in the home. On the Fridays of Sravana, women gather here for the Varalakshmi Vratam, praying for the family's well-being and plenty.

Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple

Simhachalam, Andhra Pradesh

Tirupati Balaji Temple

Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

Because the Lord himself borrowed from Kubera for his wedding, devotees believe that what they drop into the hundi goes toward his debt and returns to them many times over. People pray here for relief from loans, for prosperity in business and for a secure household, and many vow a share of their first earnings or profits to the hundi.

Vaishno Devi Temple

Katra, Jammu & Kashmir

The central pindi is revered as Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and devotees bring prayers for livelihood, business and freedom from debt. Many take the climb itself as the vow and sponsor a hawan or poojan in the Yagyashala at the Bhawan, which can be done in their name without travelling, with prasad sent by courier. The shrine's donations, more than 1,800 kg of gold and 4,700 kg of silver between 2000 and 2020, reflect how many believe the Mother has answered.
