Legend

The temple was built in 1801 by the contractor Laxman Vithu Patil, funded by Deubai Patil, a wealthy woman who had no children of her own. Tradition holds that she built it so that Ganesha would grant children to other childless women who prayed there. The small shrine grew into one of the busiest temples in India.

Why this temple matters

Siddhivinayak in Prabhadevi is Mumbai's most visited temple. The Ganesha image is carved from a single black stone and is unusual in having its trunk turned to the right, a form regarded as especially powerful and demanding of strict ritual. Riddhi and Siddhi, consorts of Ganesha, flank the deity. The temple is a landmark for politicians, film stars and ordinary Mumbaikars alike, who come before new ventures and exams.
