Legend

Tradition holds that Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here on the shore before crossing to Lanka, and again after the war to atone for killing Ravana. Rama sent Hanuman to bring a linga from Kailash; when he was delayed, Sita shaped a linga of sand, which became the Ramalingam. Hanuman's linga, the Vishwalingam, was installed beside it, and by Rama's wish it is worshipped first to this day.

Why this temple matters

Ramanathaswamy is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, one of the four Char Dham of India and a Paadal Petra Sthalam sung by the Nayanmars. Its outer corridor, about 3,850 feet long with around 1,212 pillars, is the longest temple corridor in India. The main tower is about 53 metres. There are 22 theerthams inside the temple, and the sea in front, Agni Theertham, is the foremost. The Pandyas, the Jaffna kings and the Sethupathi rulers built it over centuries.

What devotees pray for here

Dosha Remedies

Rameswaram is where Rama himself sought release from the sin of killing a Brahmin, Ravana. Devotees believe that a sea bath at Agni Theertham followed by a bath in all 22 theerthams inside the temple washes away karmic burdens and doshas. Many also perform rites for their ancestors here before darshan.

Peace & Family Harmony

For many families Rameswaram completes the Char Dham pilgrimage. Devotees come after a bereavement, after a long illness in the house or simply when the mind is restless, bathe in the theerthams and stand quietly before Ramanathaswamy, asking for calm and a settled home.

Festivals

  • Maha Shivaratri and the Masi festival (February–March): ten days of processions in the Chokkattan Mandapam
  • Aadi Thirukalyanam (July–August): the celestial wedding festival, with processions in the corridors
  • Vasanthotsavam (spring, around May–June): the spring festival of the deities

Poojas & rituals

  • Bath in the 22 theerthams, done with a temple-authorised helper in a fixed order
  • Sea bath at Agni Theertham before entering the temple
  • Spatika Linga darshan in the early morning, around 4 to 5 AM
  • Abhishekam to Ramanathaswamy, which devotees can sponsor
  • Archana in the family's name at the Ramalingam and Vishwalingam sannidhis
  • Ancestral rites (pitru karma) on the shore, arranged through local purohits
