Tradition holds that Shiva manifested here as an endless column of light, the Jyotirlinga, and that Kashi is his own city, never abandoned by him, which is why it is called Avimukta. Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganga and taking darshan of Vishwanath leads toward moksha, and that those who die in Kashi are freed from rebirth. On Rangbhari Ekadashi, devotees celebrate Shiva bringing Parvati home to Kashi after their wedding.
Why this temple matters
Kashi Vishwanath is counted first among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple was destroyed in 1194, rebuilt under Akbar in 1585, demolished by Aurangzeb in 1669, and the present temple was built beside that site in 1780 by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar. In 1835 Maharaja Ranjit Singh gave about a tonne of gold to plate the domes. The linga, about 60 cm tall, sits in a silver altar. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, opened in December 2021, now links the temple directly to the Ganga ghats; around 45,000 pilgrims came daily in 2023.
What devotees pray for here
Dosha Remedies
Kashi is the place where devotees believe accumulated karma is shed. People troubled by planetary doshas or long-running misfortune bathe in the Ganga, carry its water to the temple and pour it on the Jyotirlinga, and sponsor Rudrabhishek. Tradition holds that what is offered to Vishwanath in Kashi carries many times its usual weight.
Peace & Family Harmony
Pilgrims come here for the peace that comes from facing the end of life without fear. The elderly come to spend their last years in Kashi, families bring the ashes of loved ones, and the Mangala and Shringar aartis give even short visitors a stillness they carry home.
Health & Healing
Devotees pray to Vishwanath for recovery and long life, offer bel leaves and Ganga water on the linga, and sponsor Rudrabhishek for a sick family member. Shiva is approached here as the lord who conquers death, and prayers are made in the spirit of faith and surrender.
